Kaunas University of Medicine (KMU) is the major center of medical and public health education in Lithuania. Its history goes back to 1919. KMU is an autonomous university mainly financed by state.

KMU trains more than two thirds of all country’s medical doctors, odontologists, public health professionals, 100% of all pharmacy specialists with university education for Lithuania. The number of students in 2008 totaled more than 3800, and over 300 of them were foreign students from more than 20 countries. KMU has five faculties: Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Odontology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Nursing and Faculty of Public Health. Kaunas University Hospital with more than 2000 beds and also 4 research institutes (Institute for Biomedical Research, Institute of Cardiology, Institute of Endocrinology, Institute of Psychophysiology and Rehabilitation) complete the structure of the university. Teaching staff of Kaunas University of Medicine consists of more than 780 instructors and researchers, including 83 professors and 147 associate professors.

In the project two structural units of the university - Department of Preventive Medicine and Clinic of Family Medicine – are involved.
