Greek Association Of General Practitioners
The Greek Association of General Practitioners (ELEGEIA) was founded in 1986 and its base is in Thessaloniki. It is the scientific body of General Practice and represents a number of almost 2500 members (650 trainees and 1850 qualified GPs – 4 years VT).
The scopes of ELEGEIA are the improvement and the development of the discipline through educational and training activities, research and programs of quality assurance.
ELEGEIA has been publishing the quarterly edited journal “Primary Health Care” since 1987. The journal is cited in the Index Copernicus and approved by the Greek Ministry of Health.
ELEGEIA has been involved very actively in training of all three levels :
- • In BME level which is under the responsibility of Medical Schools of Universities, ELEGEIA has been assisting at the development of programs of early exposure of medical students in basics of PHC.
- • In VT level ELEGEIA has succeeded in providing trained tutors for the coordination and supervision of the training in hospital posts and in primary health care settings.
- • In CME level ELEGEIA has been organizing and running four annual courses : 1) Teaching the teachers, 2) Teaching basic principles of epidemiology, 3) Teaching geriatrics, 4) Teaching management and health policies.
It is remarkable that the Greek Association hosted very successfully the Wonca Europe 2005 Conference. ELEGEIA has also been developing and running a certain number of research projects and programmes on quality assurance. ELEGEIA is represented and actively participate at all European and World Organizations of GP/FM ( Wonca, Wonca Europe, EURACT, EGPRW, EQUIP, EUROPREV, EURIPA, etc).
